Since the 1960's, when commercial laser technology was first introduced,
lasers have come to influence many aspects of our lives, mostly
for the better. From medical technology to office machines, home
entertainment, communications, industrial alignment, construction
leveling, barcode scanning, targeting, and simple pointing, lasers
now play a critical role.
In the United States, laser pointers are regulated by the US Food
and Drug Administration's Center for Devices and Radiological Health.
Most laser pointers on the US market today are classified as Class
IIIA (1-5mW) devices. When used for their intended purpose these
products are generally considered safe. In recent years, laser pointer
popularity has increased due to lower costs and improved technologies
allowing for smaller sizes, higher visibility, and greater convenience
than ever before. Hand-held laser pointers have proven to be very
effective tools for instruction or presentations. While laser pointers
are widely available, it is important to remember that they are
not toys and should always be used responsibly.
Following are some important basic safety considerations to keep
in mind to prevent the misuse of laser pointers:
|
 |
When purchasing
a laser pointer, ensure that it includes a warning label identifying
its class and potential hazard to the eyes. |
 |
Never point
a laser beam at anyone, and certainly never point a laser directly
at or into another person's or animal's eye. |
 |
Never stare
into the beam projected by a laser pointer. |
 |
Never view
a laser beam using optical instruments such as magnifying lenses,
microscopes, binoculars, etc., unless the procedure has been approved
by the appropriate technical safety personnel. |
 |
Do not aim
a laser at reflective surfaces such as mirrors, polished metals, glass
surfaces, etc., that might reflect the light back at you or toward
another person. |
 |
Laser pointers
are not toys and should not be used by children. |
 |
Discourage
the inappropriate and irresponsible use of laser pointers. |
